Sunday, Public Holidays & After Hours - by appointment with a $90.00 or $110.00 surcharge applying:
(appointments between 8:00am and 7:00pm on normal trading days, even if we are trading reduced hours during holiday piriods,
do not attract a surcharge).

*We may be briefly closed for shoots from time to time, however we will always endevor be open for booked pick-ups and returns.
**After hours opening is subject to availability of stock and staff and the applicable surcharge will apply.  

After Hours Opening & Overtime Surcharges
Between 9:00pm - 6:00am (7 days a week), the opening surcharge is $110.00
All other times outside of normal opening hours, the opening surcharge is $90.00
Overtime after 6:00pm Mon-Fri & after 1:00pm Sat inclure a $20.00 surcharge every 10 minutes or part thereof.


How old do I have to be to rent?

You must be 18 years or over to rent yourself, otherwise you will need a Parent or Guardian to rent on your behalf.

Do I need Identification?

Yes, all customers will need present 100 points of Identification from Australian authorities upon your first rental, or if you have not rented within 12 months.

To reach this 100 point total, you can choose the type of identification that suits you from the following lists. In general Australian Issued Drivers Licence, Medicare Card and two ATM Cards will meet the requirments.

Group A (70 points each)

  • A fully certified birth certificate (or copy certified by a Justice of the Peace)
  • A current passport
  • An Australian citizenship certificate

Group B (40 points each)

These items must include a photo for verification

  • A current licence or permit issued under Australian law, eg. Driver’s licence
  • Identification issued by Government authorities eg. Public Service Employee ID, Pension Card, Health Care Card
  • A student identification card issued by an Australian educational institution
  • A statement from your employer or an acceptable referee verifying your identity and certifying that they have known you by your name for at least twelve months. (Preferably with a photograph of you signed by the employer or referee.
    Note: The referee must provide 100 points of identification

Group C (25 points each)

  • Official correspondence addressed to you such as a public utility account (eg. gas, water, electricity), council rates, bank statement or similar
  • Medicare, Bankcard, Visa or other credit card
  • Any other document which in the opinion of the person to whom it is produced, provides similar verification of the applicant’s identity.



What about if you are not an Australian citizen?

All customers will need present satisfactory Identification. If you are not an Australian citizen the below Identification is required, along with a credit card bond as listed below in the bond section.

  • A current passport
  • A current visa for Australia
  • Proof of address in Australia within the last 4 weeks
  • Proof of address in the country your passport was issued from
  • Two referance contact persons- One in Australia and one from the country of your passport 


Please note that we retain the right to register your rental agreement with the Australian Customs Service, for the specified rental period. Any attempt to leave the counrty with rented equipment will be considered theft (unless authorised in writting from Black Dog Camera Hire).

Do I have to pay a bond?

If you pay for your rental with a valid credit card and are an Australian citizen, and the rental equipment value is under $2000.00, you may be required to fill out a form with your credit card details when you collect your rental equipment. A refundable bond may be applied, taken on a valid credit card for the equivalent of the excess amount for the equipment you have rented / hired (normally $500 or $1000). If you are renting equipment with a value of $2000.00 or more (specified under the below table) a bond may apply - or if you do not have a credit card and/or paying cash. If you are not an Australian citizen or you are a new first time customer with Australian ID, we will require a refundable bond (cash or card). The cash/card bond required will be different depending on how much equipment you wish to rent.

NOTE: Bond is only refundable if the equipment is returned on time in the same condition as hired, otherwise part or all the bond will be forfeited.

Do I need identification the 2nd or subsequent times I may rent?

For Austalian citizens, after your first rental, you are simply required to present a photo ID showing your current address. If you have not rented with in 12 months of you previous rental, you will be required to present 100 points of identification again.

I have found a Camera / lens on your website I would like to hire – what now?

The easiest way is to book online using our booking system. You can also email us at If you need something urgently, please phone us and we can process your booking over the phone 07 3036 0997.

When placing your booking, please nominate the equipment you would like to hire as well as the dates, pick up and drop off times. We will then contact you to confirm a pick-up time at our office at Shop 2, 90 Vulture Street, West End, Brisbane QLD 4101, where collect your items and pay for the hire in-person. If you are unable to collect in person, we can process your booking online or over the phone via credit card and arrange to have the equipment couriered to you and back to us again. You will also be asked to sign a Terms and Conditions document before being able to hire your equipment or if you book online you can electronicly accept the terms and conditions.

Is a deposit upon booking required?

Yes, A 20% deposit is required when booking. You may pay this over the phone by credit card or do a direct deposit to:

Is there Insurance?

Yes, the rental gear is automaticly insured and the excess is $1000.00 (no extra to pay, it is included in the rental amount).
You may opt to reduces your payable toward the excess to $500.00 by paying an additional 10% of the rental fees (fee applies to the whole rental amount).

How can I pay for my rental?

Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, EFTPOS, Direct Deposit or Cash.

What time can I pick up my rental on the day of the booking?

Generally pick ups for rental equipment are between 12:00 Noon and 6:00pm Monday to Friday (additional fees may apply) and 11:00am to 1:00pm on Saturday. Prior to 11am pick up on Saturday will incur a weekend rate.
If you need to collect piror to these time if should be no problem if you just let us know at some point before pick up (give us 2 days notice if able).
We are more than happy to facilitate Moning pick ups as long as the equipment is available.

Can I take the equipment out of the country?

Yes but only if you are an Australian citizen, however our insurer does not provide insurance outside of Australia and you will be required to show proof you have arranged your own insurance. We will also require two credit cards on file and alternate contact details. Contact us for more information.

I want to hire a camera for the weekend – when do I pick it up and drop it off? How much is the weekend rate?

You can collect your item after 12pm on a Friday afternoon and you must return it by 12noon on a Monday morning. If you return it later than this you may be charged the full daily rate for the Monday. If you’re planning to return the equipment before 9:30am please inform us at the time of making the booking.

 Our special weekend rate in equal to a 2 day rental fee, you get 1 day for free.

Exactly what are the time periods for a day, week and a month when hiring?

A daily rate is a full 24 hour period, which begins when the item has been booked to be collected. That item must then be returned by that same time the following day. If you do not show, you will be charged 20% of the 1 day rate of the entire booking.

A week is a full 7 day period which begins when the item is collected. That item must be returned by that time 7 days thereafter.

A month is a 4 week period which begins when the item is collected. That item must be returned by that time 4 weeks thereafter.

Can rentals be arranged ouside of normal business hours?

Yes, we can arrange for collections and returns outside of business hours, though special opening surcharges may apply. Please note, our standard opening hours are 9:00am - 6:00pm, Monday to Friday and 9:30am - 1:00pm Saturday (Closed Sunday).
